Welcome to IN TOUCH

coaching with horses

My name is Emma and together with my horses Tjark, Dries, Piotr and Rody I offer equine-assisted coaching for adults and children. At “In Touch” we take the time:

  • to experience
  • to feel
  • to reflect
  • to reconnect with yourself and others
  • to discover what is important to you in your life, in the here and now.

Through contact with the horses you get "in touch" with yourself. In a peaceful countryside setting you gain access to deeper insights and awareness. In a peaceful countryside setting you gain access to deeper insights and awareness.

“When you lose touch with inner stillness you lose touch with yourself.
When you lose touch with yourself you lose touch with the world.”

– Eckhart Tolle

Emma

I am Emma Hadley, cultural anthropologist, experienced teacher and equine-assisted coach. Born and raised in beautiful rural England. I grew up there as the youngest of a large family. We had lots of lovely animals: cats, dogs, rabbits, birds and ponies. I spent a lot of time outside in the countryside.

25 years ago in Pakistan, where I worked as a trainer, I met a Dutchman on a bike and since then I’ve been living in the Netherlands. With my partner and three children I live in the beautiful, quiet village of Herpt, close to Den Bosch in the municipality of Heusden.

My passion is learning. How we learn (or sometimes not!), what we learn, when we learn it and from whom. I worked in special education and as a primary school teacher in England. After that I worked as a trainer and teacher trainer in the Netherlands and abroad.

My life has brought me into contact with a rich diversity of people; children in schools, teachers in the Himalayas, trainers in the camps in post-tsunami Sri Lanka, refugee families and education, health and welfare professionals here in the Netherlands.

As an equine-assisted coach I bring my passion, experience and expertise together. I am in contact with people, horses, the natural world and especially with myself!

Through contact with the horses, you get "in touch" with yourself.

– Oscar Wilde

Coaching with horses

Equine-assisted coaching is a journey of self-discovery. It is an experiential form of coaching, involving horses. It works to support the people’s well-being, in mind, body and spirit.

As a trained and certified coach (www.keulseweg.nl), I work with you and the horses on the basis of equality. I facilitate a process in which you gain insight into your thoughts, behaviours and feelings. During the sessions you can experiment and practice new insights and skills.

The methodology I use is based on Gestalt therapy with a focus on contact and awareness. Contact between the coachee, the horse and the coach is central and provides the context within which your story can unfold.

"Gestalt therapy is a form of psychotherapy. The goal is to help the client to understand and to accept themselves. To get more in touch with themselves and their environment." (Meijer &Werner, 2023)

A horse is an expert in reading body language and energy. As a herd animal and historically a prey animal, they are always alert and highly sensitive. Horses communicate by giving immediate feedback. They respond directly, neutrally and most importantly, they do not judge!

The horse-human relationship is powerful and healing. With the horses, we are invited and sometimes challenged, to experience, feel and reflect. Their reactions and interactions with people offer insight into our often unconscious or hidden feelings and behaviours.

Horses help us to focus and to be present with what we experience in the here and now, in body and in mind. They offer authentic contact, emotional safety and information about ourselves.

“Change happens when you become who you are, not when you try to be something you’re not!”

– Fritz Perls

Adults

At "In Touch", the methodology is client-centered. This stream within psychology, (client- based, developed by Carl Rogers), focuses on the agency and knowledge of every person.

This means that your experiences, your reflections and how you think and feel are central. You are the expert of your own life, of your own needs and challenges. Only you know and feel what the best solutions are for you.

"In the sessions and also in the periods in between or after, the client himself/herself, in the experiential process of his/her life, brings about change." (Meijer &Werner, 2023)

Working in an experiential way with horses, we use all our senses . Our senses are alert and we are physically active. We begin to understand our body as a source of information and wisdom.

In contact with animals and the natural world, there is more balance between what we think and what we feel. We are invited to think less, analyze less and use our intellect less to find the solutions we are seeking.

“Lose your mind and come to your senses.”

– Fritz Perls

Experiences

It was special to have contact on a completely different level (non-verbal and with no noise). I have real clarity about some of my thinking and feeling patterns.

- Marieke
I am able to enjoy more of what I already have in the present moment. I have started to see less of the negatives and more of the positives in the current phase of my life.
- Lotte
The horses made it easier for me to let go and be in the moment; just being, experiencing, resting and relaxing.
- Christina

It is a calm and pleasant working environment. There is an openness around what is happening. The interaction between the horse and my feelings was striking.

- Paul, Emma is a quiet sweet coach

I think Emma is really nice and friendly. She has a lovely approach which I like. I always find the coaching very nice. I really like working with horses.

- Lars (age 14)
Emma radiates calm and confidence. She takes the time to explain everything to me and get used to the horses at my own pace. She knows what she's doing. She knows how to pick the right questions about what's going on.

Emma made it possible for me to step out of my own comfort zone by letting me know that I could do anything.

- Elma

Children

Equine-assisted coaching can help children with all sorts of questions or challenges. If a child is struggling, or has lost their balance due to circumstances - for example at school, or home or with friends, coaching and contact with the horses can be hugely beneficial.

Sometimes, in difficult moments, children have the feeling that a lot of people are talking about them or have an opinion about what's happening. The child's strengths can be hidden from view under fear, anger, sadness or stress. It can be difficult for a child to put his/her thoughts or feelings into words. Sometimes children feel misunderstood.

Children need emotional safety, space and time to flourish. At "In Touch", children can be fully themselves and together with the horses can learn to deal with what comes their way in a (child) appropriate way. They can experience, feel and discover what they are good at.

In contact with the horses, by walking, cuddling or grooming for example, a child can come back to themselves (can "earth") and regain balance and strength. Through the activities with the horses, children often intuitively identify the issues at hand. The horses provide emotional safety and relaxation.

Practical

What do we do at "In Touch"?

Here we are outside in the field, under the old pear tree in the company of the horses. We feel the sun, or the wind or the rain, we hear the birds and we look out over the river "Oude Maasje" and the fields beyond. There is peace and time.

The first session starts with an intake. This way we get to know each other better and exchange some background information. I tell you a bit more about coaching with horses. Maybe you have some questions.

We look together to see if there is a coaching question, or perhaps a theme that you want to look at. What would you like to work on or gain more clarity about? This could be anything: Communication, relationships, assertiveness, creativity, problem-solving skills, leadership, responsibility, relaxation, cooperation, trust. A decision, a situation, a conflict or a feeling.

We usually start with a short grounding exercise. This way you come into the here and now and connect with your body and your mind. Then we walk to the horses and you meet them, in your own time and at your own pace. What is it like to be with the horses? Is there one of the horses that you would like to work with in this session?

You will be given a simple activity to do together with the horse. You will have all the space and time you need. There is no right or wrong. When you are done, we discuss together how it went. I'll share some observations and ask some questions. We have time for reflection. Sometimes it's helpful to practice something further or try something new.

At the end of the session there is time to say goodbye to the horse, tidy up and check what experiences and insights you are taking with you.

All activities take place with your feet on the ground, next to and not on the horse. We work outside, always wear closed, comfortable shoes or boots. Dress warmly if it is cold, in clothes that can get a bit dirty. In the summer, a cap or sunglasses are handy.

"Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will rule your life and you call it 'your fate'."

– Carl Gustav Jung.

Offer

Coaching session

"Coaching" and "contact" sessions are available. A combination of the two can also be effective.

In a "coaching" session, we explore together for insights, answers and solutions. Everyone has their own path. There is no right or wrong. What you need is personal and will unfold. een eigen pad. Er is geen goed of fout. Wat je nodig hebt is persoonlijk en zal zich ontvouwen.

"The most beautiful moments take place in the simplicity of peace and contact."

We know from experience that the themes in a coaching session often take time to sink in. It is often in the days after a session or in between sessions that thoughts, feelings and connections, crystallize and make sense. These are moments of awareness that make us ready to take the next step. That is why it is advisable to do a course of sessions which gradually give a more complete picture.

Contact session

In a "contact" session you get in touch with the horses and yourself in peace. Think of grooming, brushing, cuddling and chatting. Contact sessions can also be done in a small group for up to 3 people. They are especially useful for children, who seek relaxation and contact in complete safety. This way they can benefit from the peace and space the horses have to offer.
